Cité de l'amitiè
Project type
Research
Date
January 2023
Place
Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Brussels, Belgium
The project aims to compare three different declinations of the same theme: renewing the city of friendship. The existence of a limit, understood as a boundary, crest, terminal point, and line of demarcation, both in the physical and philosophical sense, is necessary to observe any phenomenon.
The very etymology of the term "definition" recalls the act of drawing boundaries that enclose the meaning of a concept. A discontinuity, a demarcation, makes a shape distinguishable as a figure from its background. A spatial surface cannot be recognized as a place without a physical or symbolic boundary that, by enclosing it, makes that portion of space perceptible and recognizable as a unitary area. Therefore, the concept of boundary guided this research on the residential complex. Applying the concept of boundary to the project allowed us to highlight three scenarios: heterotopic, centripetal, and densification.
The first involves a physical intervention on the boundary, which would significantly alter residents' perceptions and their relationship with the rest of the city; this is an introverted intervention. The second, through a centralized system, seeks to attract new flows of residents, even from outside the complex. The final scenario proposes densifying the diaphragmatic zone at the site's boundary by incorporating a whole series of services envisioned in the second phase of the initial project, which have remained unrealized.
