Conference hall Global Campus of Human Rights
Project type
Multipurpose space
Date
February 2022
Place
Venice Lido (VE)
Role
Collaboration with Architects Alberto Ottaviani and Alessandro Folesani
The project is not limited to proposing a building, but aspires to become a symbol, the embodiment of what we mean by Global Campus, the new Global Campus. Inclusion is the principle that unites the three fundamental pillars of this work: human rights, community, and the nearby city of Venice; but its model extends beyond geographical boundaries and has universal reach. The project's guiding principle was respect for space, a respect that took the form of a work of subtraction aimed at making room for greenery, the true protagonist of the structure. The trees and greenery present before the intervention will not be affected, and the lawn area will be increased thanks to the extension of the park onto the roof of the new building. The current structure features a green park with valuable trees that are unfortunately underutilized. Combining this latter aspect with the requests made by the GC representatives, we envisioned the pre-existing trees as the embodiment of these same rights, creating a true human rights park. Indispensable rights such as the right to life, freedom from slavery, freedom from torture, and the impossibility of retroactive criminal prosecution: the new building embraces them, includes them, and protects them within its confines, allowing them to thrive in safety.
