Carpi station

Project type

Urban regeneration

Date

July 2020

Place

Carpi (MO)

This architectural and urban regeneration project for Carpi railway station is one of the elements forming part of a wider programme of urban redevelopment implemented through the ‘Carpi Light’ strategic urban project, which involves collaboration between the municipality of Carpi and UNIPR. Specifically, the project focuses on the railway station. The project begins by identifying the site’s key issues, such as: the lack of routes for non-motorised transport and a proper, easily accessible link to the cycle and pedestrian path running from north to south via the station; the scarcity of services available to the community and, in particular, to the station’s daily users; the presence of adjacent railway shelters that have fallen into disuse; the inadequate road network in front of the station and the bus terminal system; the lack of a connection (underpass) to the eastern bank, which is cut off by the tracks and forms an important nature trail within the city; the incongruity of the urban façade in relation to the volumes of the station block. The project therefore aims to address these issues whilst seeking to preserve the existing structures as far as possible.
