Fish Market, Luigi Cosenza, 1929-35

Project type

Redrawing

The Naples Fish Market, built between 1929 and 1935 and designed by Luigi Cosenza, is an example of modern and rationalist architecture.
The Fish Market represents a complete departure from the initial neoclassical design proposed by the Technical Office. Luigi Cosenza's style was chosen for its design, which was very cost-effective to build.
The Fish Market is located on the Maddalena Bridge, adjacent to the port and fairly close to the central station. The building consists of a large atrium with a glass brick structure and large openings to ensure natural light.
The interior consists of a large trading room covered by a barrel vault and surrounded by rooms for individual traders. A basement houses cold storage and storage rooms. The public entrance is via a grand staircase on the north side. In 1979, Cosenza proposed to the Municipality an expansion of the facility
to accommodate the growing business volume, but his project was never realized, and only sporadic and inconsistent adjustments were made.
